You can help people prepare tax returns and access vital tax credits!  We will provide the training and support you need to become an IRS Certified VITA volunteer in Pisgah Legal’s Tax Program.

What will I do as a volunteer?

  • Volunteers are needed to do actual tax preparation (including assistance with the IRS Non-filer’s Portal) and also to assist with intake and screening of taxpayers. All work can be performed remotely and there will likely be optional opportunities for in-person assistance at times as well. COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place for all program activities. Do I have to have tax preparation experience?

  • NO! You do not have to have tax preparation experience. We will connect you to all the training you will need to competently and confidently prepare tax returns! Our training will be online this year to ensure safety for all staff and volunteers.

Is there a role for me if I don’t want to prepare taxes for clients?

  • Absolutely! We also have volunteer opportunities as an Intake Specialist and taxpayer Screener. Volunteers in these roles wills help complete intake forms, call taxpayers for screening and setting appointments, and/or assist tax preparers with making copies of documents.

What hours would I need to commit?

  • We ask that you commit to a 3 hour shift per week for the next tax season (late-January through mid- April). We will also have some in-person events and will request additional assistance for those dates as needed.

Who are our superheroes?”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said that “life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”  Pisgah Legal volunteer Martha Ziegler answers that question by helping people access their tax benefits as a VITA Certified tax preparer with Pisgah Legal’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program. This program provides free tax preparation for qualified tax-filers earning $57,000 or below.
