Plateau Summer Giving Challenge

The Plateau Summer Giving Challenge, made possible by Lisa and Glenn Ullmann, will match gifts up to $25,000 to support Pisgah Legal Services’ work in Macon and Jackson counties. Serving Macon and Jackson Counties

For more than 45 years, Pisgah Legal Services has provided free civil legal aid to people across Western North Carolina. In Macon and Jackson counties, our attorneys, advocates, and social workers help individuals and families overcome legal barriers that threaten their safety, housing, health, and financial stability.

Working across 17 practice areas—including domestic violence prevention, homelessness prevention, disaster recovery, immigration, consumer protection, veterans law, and more—we help people build safer, more stable futures.

Why This Work Matters

Many of our neighbors are facing increasing financial pressure and limited access to legal help.

In our local community:

  • More than 21% of children in Jackson County live in poverty.
  • Nearly half of renters in Macon County are cost-burdened, spending a significant portion of their income on housing.
  • 15% of Jackson County residents are uninsured.
  • 16.2% of Macon County residents experience food insecurity.

Hurricane Helene deepened many of these challenges, and rising costs for housing, food, and transportation continue to make it harder for families to make ends meet.

Local Impact

In 2025, Pisgah Legal helped 1,374 people in Macon and Jackson counties, including more than 500 children.

Every case represents a neighbor whose life changed because legal help was available when they needed it most.

Our work includes helping survivors find safety, preventing families from losing their homes, securing benefits for veterans and older adults, assisting immigrants seeking legal status, resolving consumer issues, and connecting families with the resources they need to move forward.

Rooted in the Plateau

Pisgah Legal is proud to serve Macon and Jackson counties through local outreach, legal clinics, and strong partnerships with community organizations. Together with our volunteers, supporters, and partners, we’re working to ensure everyone in the Plateau has access to justice, regardless of income.
