Recovering an Army Veteran’s Money

Karen, an 83-year-old, disabled Army Veteran, saved for years to build an addition to her modest home. Months after paying the contractor more than $19,000, they still had not started the work. Eventually, Karen discovered the company was defunct, their license revoked, and that the owner had been indicted.

Karen contacted Pisgah Legal Services. Attorney Robert Wharton used her careful notes and correspondence to build a case. For over a year, Robert worked with Karen to successfully sue the contractor, secure a judgment, and apply for compensation from the NC Homeowners Recovery Fund, the only hope of recovering her money.

Robert drove Karen to Raleigh where she testified before the Fund Board. They won, and Karen’s payment was returned.

She says, “I never expected to see this money again. Robert is gifted. He could be making a lot of money outside in the world. He is a godsend!”

In gratitude, Karen donated a portion of the money to Pisgah Legal so that she might help others.
