Rural Victims’ Advocate

Pisgah Legal Services, a community-based, non-profit law firm which provides free civil legal advice and representation to low-income people in the area surrounding Asheville, North Carolina, has an opening for an Advocate in the Mountain Violence Prevention Project (MVPP). This position will primarily be housed out of the Hendersonville location assisting attorneys to provide support, advocacy, and outreach to help victims of domestic violence escape abuse and rebuild their lives.

Qualifications: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to understand, remember and carry out complex instructions; experience working with vulnerable populations, domestic violence survivors, or parties to litigation all would be assets. Social work training preferred. Ability to flex schedule, including some night and weekend work. Ability to drive to all of the counties within our service areas as needed.

Responsibilities: Advocate for victims of domestic violence in the criminal and civil court contexts; attend criminal and civil hearings with clients; help clients take out warrants and initiate criminal investigations; keep clients informed of their court dates for criminal hearings; help provide evidence and information to investigating officers and District Attorneys’ offices; facilitate communication with law enforcement and criminal prosecutors; keep apprised of resources available to victims in our rural areas, and help clients secure housing and other basic needs; provide basic secretarial services to assigned professional staff (typing, copying, mailing, drafting pleadings, scheduling appointments, other assistance as needed; screen applicants for eligibility; conduct outreach events and educate community partners, law enforcement, and potential clients about services and our referral process; maintain relationships with partnering agencies; increase capacity of PLS and MVPP to serve survivors.
