For more than 31 years, PLS has pursued justice by providing civil legal aid to low-income people. To meet critical community needs, we have added staff and served more people in crisis each year.

Pisgah Legal Services faced desperate overcrowding at the Gudger House, its main office for more than 27 years.  We had grown in response to community needs and by 2002 had outgrown its office space.  With the space crisis at the Gudger House:

  • PLS was forced to turn away volunteer attorneys and other volunteers due to lack of work space;
  • The safety of PLS clients and volunteers was jeopardized;
  • PLS' overall effectiveness was hindered with staff doubled up in office spaces and working in the kitchen, basement and a closet.
Based on state standards, our staff of 38 should have a main office of 10,000 square feet instead of the current 4,500 square feet.

After an extensive two-year search, we found a building that will secure our future and allow us to serve the next generation. We purchased 62 Charlotte Street, a two-story building with 13,776 square feet of office space, and moved in March 2009.   We are working to complete The Justice For All Capital Campaign to pay for this critically needed office space.

In November 2007, Pisgah Legal Services launched its first-ever capital campaign to purchase larger office space and expand to serve more people in crisis.

On September 30, 2009, PLS completed its capital campaign, securing $750,000 in challenge grants and pledges to reach its $5 million goal!  We are amazed and appreciative of the tremendous outpouring of community support.  Thank you to all of the 900+ donors and foundations that made this possible.

With adequate space and secure funding we will double the number of clients we serve over the next 15 years and respond to pressing community needs well into the future.
