Domestic Violence and Child Custody Attorney 

Pisgah Legal Services is a community-based, non-profit law firm which provides free, civil legal assistance to low-income people in Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, Polk, Rutherford and Transylvania Counties of western North Carolina. These counties are in the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are more than 80,000 client-eligible people in these six counties (at or below 125% of the federal poverty level). PLS directly served 15,000 people in 2015 and provides community education and outreach to many other low-income clients.

PLS is seeking a full-time, N.C. licensed attorney to work at the Family Justice Center in Hendersonville and in Buncombe County. This attorney will help victims of domestic violence escape domestic violence and live independent of their abusers.  The attorney will also serve victims of child abuse, as well as their non-offending parents.  PLS strives to provide holistic services to clients including and beyond the initial protective order. Several years of experience in family law would be helpful, as this attorney’s caseload will involve a high percentage of child custody cases.

It is possible that PLS will receive other grant funding for another attorney position to serve part or all of the six-county area. If so, the work will include serving victims of abuse and sexual assault to obtain protective orders, child custody orders, and other relief.


  • Representation and advice to clients to prevent and remedy domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault cases.
  • Preventive legal education and outreach.
  • Some travel within sixty miles of our offices.
  • Attorney(s) will also be responsible for keeping abreast of developments in the law and disseminating information to staff, volunteer attorneys and the public.

Qualifications:  N.C. licensed attorney.  Spanish language skills would be an asset, as would experience in addressing problems associated with domestic violence, family law, and other areas of poverty law.

 Responsibilities:  Handle a caseload of domestic violence prevention cases, involving frequent  custody litigation and some cases to obtain protective orders in court.  Work with domestic violence prevention agencies. Some travel within 60 miles is required.  Caseload may change in the future to include homelessness prevention and other types of poverty law.
