Bilingual Domestic Violence Court Advocate/Legal Assistant
Pisgah Legal Services, a community-based, non-profit law firm which provides free civil legal advice and representation to low-income people in the area surrounding Asheville, North Carolina, has an opening for a bilingual (English/Spanish) Advocate/Legal Assistant in the Mountain Violence Prevention Project (MVPP). This position will primarily be housed out of the Asheville location with the possibility of a portion of time spent at the Buncombe Country Family Justice Center assisting attorneys to provide victims of domestic violence with legal representation and advice to help victims escape abuse and rebuild their lives.
Qualifications: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish; ability to understand, remember and carry out complex instructions; skilled in office systems. Minimum one to two years of experience in criminal justice and/or court advocacy, experience preventing domestic violence, family and immigration law experience — all would be assets. Ability to flex schedule, including some night and weekend work.
Responsibilities: Use knowledge of court processes to advocate for Spanish speaking victims of Domestic Violence in the criminal and civil court contexts. Attend criminal hearings with clients, help clients take out warrants with local Magistrates’ offices, assist with initiating felony investigations, keep clients informed of their court dates for criminal hearings, and help provide evidence and information to investigating officers and District Attorneys’ offices. Facilitate communication with law enforcement and criminal prosecutors. Accompany clients to their 10-day hearings for Domestic Violence Protective Orders to provide moral support and to help secure domestic violence protective orders against their abusers. Provide basic bi-lingual secretarial services to assigned professional staff (typing, copying, mailing, drafting pleadings, scheduling appointments, other assistance as needed). Screen applicants for eligibility. Conduct outreach events and educate community partners, law enforcement, and potential clients. Maintain relationships with partnering agencies and provide assistance to direct client referrals. Increase capacity of PLS and MVPP to serve survivors who speak Spanish as their primary language and who may also need assistance with immigration law issues. Assist Spanish speaking clients throughout PLS as funding permits.
